Linguistic Anthropology

Linguistic Anthropology at FSU offers graduate students training in language analysis and the cultural associations of languages, using sociolinguistics and the ethnography of speaking as frameworks for understanding the complex relations between language, cognition and culture, and the patterns of language use in speech communities. Faculty and student research features discourse analysis of modern speech genres and the literary student analysis of Classic Maya hieroglyphic texts, as well as the functions of language in maintaining ethnic identity in the face of integration into modern societies, and the relation of language form and use to sociality. Research areas include Mesoamerica and South America. Language study in Quechua and Chol is offered for interested students.
