Sociocultural Anthropology
The sociocultural program seeks to combine the practice of anthropology with a view to the
history of the discipline and current theoretical issues. Areas of faculty research within
the department include symbolic anthropology, humanistic anthropology, religion, gender and kinship,
economic anthropology, political anthropology, folklore, and ethnohistory. Geographical
specializations are East and Southeast Asia, Middle and South America, and Africa. The sociocultural
program at FSU emphasizes field research for students at all levels, and the faculty seeks
collaboration with the other subfields. The sociocultural program provides many opportunities
for students to construct interdisciplinary courses of study.
