Sociocultural Anthropology

The sociocultural program seeks to combine the practice of anthropology with a view to the history of the discipline and current theoretical issues. Areas of faculty research within the department include symbolic anthropology, humanistic anthropology, religion, gender and kinship, economic anthropology, political anthropology, folklore, and ethnohistory. Geographical specializations are East and Southeast Asia, Middle and South America, and Africa. The sociocultural program at FSU emphasizes field research for students at all levels, and the faculty seeks collaboration with the other subfields. The sociocultural program provides many opportunities for students to construct interdisciplinary courses of study.
