Osteological Analysis from the Vésztő-Bikeri Site, by Michelle Hughes

During the 2001 field season at Vésztő 20, a single inhumation burial was recovered from Block 2. This burial was intrusive into the Copper Age levels, and was classified as a 10th century Hungarian Conquest Period inhumation (Figure 1). For more information about the grave goods and horse that were included with the burial, please see the publications section of this website.

My work during the 2002 season focused on completing a differential diagnosis of the human remains recovered from this grave (Figure 2). The individual was an adult male age 40 (+/- 5 yrs) with multiple pathologies. Evidence of DGD and arthritic activity were noted on numerous vertebrae, the sacrum, both acetabula, the right fibula, right humerus and ulna. Osteophytic activity was also noted on both the right and left calcaneal tubers. Past trauma was evident on both the cranium (possible healed stab wound) and the distal 1/3 of the right ulna and radius (healed fracture) (Figure 3). A more detailed account of these results will be presented at the 2003 SAA meetings in Milwaukee.

In addition to the analyses undertaken on the intrusive burial from Veszto 20, I also had the opportunity to begin to clean and analyze the human remains from multiple burials at a Bodrogkerestur site from nearby Gyula (Figures 4 and 5). These remains were recovered during a rescue excavation in 2000.
