Black Sea Project
Maritime archaeology plays an important role in The Black Sea Trade Project,
a joint project of the Institute for Exploration, the Graduate School of
Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, Florida State University,
the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, and the University Museum of the
University of Pennsylvania among others. Professor Cheryl Ward served as
chief maritime archaeologist for the investigation of four Byzantine ships
in the Black Sea aboard the research vessel KNORR in August, 2003.
