Universities with Programs in Underwater Archaeology


Institute of Archaeology, University of London MA in Maritime Archaeology

This new program defines maritime archaeology as the study of ships and harbors in their wider social, political, environmental and economic contexts, together with an understanding of coastal and submerged cultural landscapes. Our aim is to relate maritime archaeology to the broader body of archaeological knowledge and theory, rather than treating it as a discrete sub-discipline.


Underwater Archaeology at Florida State University, U.S.A

FSU has been activly conducting underwater archaeological research since the mid-1950's, longer than any other academic institution. The Department of Anthropology offers PhD, MA, and undergraduate degrees with a focus on underwater archaeology. FSU also houses the Academic Diving Program, one of North America's premier scientific diving institutions, which provides a wide array of diving resources for researchers and students.


The Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University, U.S.A.

Texas A&M has conducted underwater archaeological research around the world since it became affiliated with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in 1976. The Nautical Archaeology Program offers undergraduate, Master's, and PhD degrees.


East Carolina's Program in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology Program in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology

East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, offers a Master's degree focusing on the history and archaeology of the worlds maritime heritage. The degree is offered through the Department of History.


Underwater Science and Educational Resources (USER) at Indiana University, U.S.A.

USER is a program under the Department of Recreation and Park Administration. USER offers some classes and fieldwork in underwater archaeology, focusing on research and interpretation of cultural and biological resources and development of underwater parks.


The Archaeology Institute at University of West Florida, U.S.A.

In addition to a terrestrial archaeology program, University of West Florida has established the Marine Archaeology Program. Their current projects include the Emmanuel Point Wreck, which is Florida's oldest known shipwreck.


Marine Option Program at University of Hawaii, U.S.A.

The Marine Option Program hosts the Maritime Archaeology and History Program, which offers students a graduate certificate. The Program hosts an annual symposium on the maritime archaeology and history of the Pacific, and offers a Maritime Archaeology summer field school.


Department of Anthropology at Brown University, U.S.A.

Brown offers a traditional Anthropology degree and offers coursework and fieldwork opportunities in underwater and nautical archaeology. Their research focus is the anthropological and socio-cultural aspects of seafaring or other maritime activities.


University of Haifa, Israel.

The Unversity of Haifa has a long tradition of active research in Meditteranean underwater archaeology. Current projects include investigations at Caesarea, between Tel Aviv and Haifa in Isreal.


Scottish Institute of Maritime Studies at the University of St. Andrews, UK.

The Institute offers several graduate degrees including PhD in Maritime Studies. The degrees involve multidisiplinary education and research, including underwater archaeology, history, and ethnography. St. Andrews also houses the Archaeological Diving Unit and the Scottish branch of the Nautical Archaeology Society.


Department of Archaeology at University of Bristol, UK.

Offers a Masters degree in Maritime Archaeology and History. Their program involves academic and professional studies, coursework, and a dissertation. The program is associated with the Centre for Research in Maritime Archaeology and History.


Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at James Cook University, N. Queensland, Australia.

The Department is currently developing a program in Marine Archaeology.

Archaeology at Flinders University of South Australia

The Flinders University of South Australia offers an Archaeology Degree (both undergraduate and graduate). Under Mark Staniforth, the University does conduct underwater archaeology on such sites as the Sydney Cove and other shipwrecks, and offers classes in Maritime Archaeology.


Curtin University of Technology

Southampton University

The Department of Archaeology at Southampton University offers a one year taught Masters course in 'Maritime Archaeology', either MA or MSc depending on the options taken and disseration topic. Most options incorporate practical work including participation in ongoing research projects in the UK and abroad. Students can continue to PhD.

There are also several maritime archaeology courses and fieldwork opportunities for undergraduates taking the honours degree in archaeology.

Centre for Maritime Archaeology (CMA) at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland

The Centre for Maritime Archaeology (CMA) at the University of Ulster was formed in February 1999, and is jointly funded by the University and by the Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland). It's faculty consists of experts in maritime archaeology and marine archaeological geophysics as well as several research archaeologists from DoE's coastal archaeology unit. The Centre is engaged in a variety of research projects and offers a Master of Science course in Maritime Archaeology.
