Florida State University, along with an number of other research
institutions based in Tallahassee, houses a prodigious collection of research
tools for the underwater archaeologist. Strozier Library is the main library
for Florida State University, and contains a collection of over two million
books and periodicals, over 150,000 sheet maps, almost four million micro-materials,
and over 500,000 government documents. Strozier supports research in subjects
such as archaeology, anthropology, history, the humanities, philosophy, classics,
languages, literature, and economics, among others. Most of the material related
to underwater archaeology and maritime history is located in Strozier. The
Dirac Science Library houses books and periodicals in the various hard sciences,
including some aspects of nautical science and archaeology.
Strozier Library also houses the Alan Albright Collection in
Underwater Archaeology, maintained in the library's Special Collections
unit. Alan Albright, one of the nation's underwater archaeology pioneers,
donated his personal research library to FSU in 1997. This collection
contains over 400 books, reports, documents, and periodicals related
to underwater archaeology, historical archaeology, and maritime history.
Other research institutions located in Tallahassee include
the State Bureau of Archaeological Research, which maintains a program
library of archaeological and underwater archaeological resources (Florida
geographical focus) as well as the Florida Master Site Files, the State
Library of Florida and the Florida State Archives, and the National
Park Service's Southeast Archaeological Center, which maintains a program
library of underwater and terrestrial archaeological materials (with
a Southeastern and circum-Caribbean geographical focus).
