Ballast Cove, Dog Island
2000

Research in Ballast Cove consisted of systematic survey for new sites, such as numerous ballast piles, and recording the remains of a shipwreck, possibly of the late 19th - early 20th century. In February and March 2000, the ANT 4131 class, Techniques of Underwater Site Research, located intact wooden hull remains and a possibly associated large metal structure. The staff of the Dog Island Shipwreck Survey decided to investigate this new site during the Summer 2000 Field School in Underwater Archaeology.

The project was two-fold: first, to survey, catalogue and record the shipwreck as well as other sites in proximity, and second, to train students in ethics, theory and techniques of underwater archaeology. Two weeks of investigation succeeded in the discovery of additional ballast piles, artifacts that may be associated with the wreck, and artifacts possibly associated with other historic shipwrecks and sites in Ballast Cove.
