Department of Anthropology Requirements

Florida State University offers the B.A. and B.S. degrees with a major in anthropology, and the outstanding undergraduate student may qualify for Honors as well. The normal undergraduate curriculum in anthropology offers training in socio-cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and linguistics.

The requirements for the baccalaureate degree are:

Major in Anthropology

30 semester hours in the department to include...
  • ANT 2410 - Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
  • ANT 2511 - Introduction to Physical Anthropology
  • ANT 3101 - Fundamentals of Archaeology
  • ANT 3610 - Language and Culture

Of the 30 hours, 15 semester hours must be taken at the 4000 level, of which no more than 3 hours of work graded S/U, no more than 3 hours of field work courses, and no hours of ANT 4907 (Directed Individual Study) may be counted toward fulfillment of the 4000 level requirements.

Students are reminded that no more than 9 semester hours of credit carried under the course number ANT 4930 may be applied towards fulfillment of either the department's credit hour requirement for majors, or the University's minimum credit hour requirement for graduation.

No anthropology course for which the student receives a grade of "D" or lower may count toward satisfaction of the major requirements. The normal course carries a credit of 3 semester hours.

Minor (for students in the Anthropology Major)

Students are required to complete 12 semester hours in a related field, unless engaged as a double-major. Please check the Minor requirements of the particular department.

Requirements for a Minor in Anthropology (for students with a major other than Anthropology)

12 semester hours to include either ANT 2410-Introduction to Cultural Anthropology or ANT 2511-Introduction to Physical Anthropology.

Honors

The Department of Anthropology offers a program in honors in the major to encourage talented junior and seniors to undertake independent and original research as part of the undergraduate experience.
