Santa Catarina Palopo, a small picturesque farming village, lies on the shores of Lake Atitlan in the department of Solola. The women distinguish themselves by weaving fine textiles that are sold throughout the area. Tourists visiting the well known, lakeside vacation town of Panajachel are familiar with the polite, soft-spoken Maya women clad in beautiful blue and purple outfits.

Traditionally, the huipils of Santa Catarina Palopo were characterized by red and white striped backgrounds with limited amounts of brocaded decoration (see "Two generations"). Now, greens, blues, and purples are commonly used and hundreds of images of animals, plants, and people are embroidered into the textiles. The combination of these deep colors with their numerous design patterns make Santa Catarina's outfits some of the most distinctive in Guatemala.
